This simply represents one of the many linguistic errors made by George W. Bush while he was president.

But it highlights one crucial factor: Nobody speaks perfectly, including prominent politicians, who are practiced in public speaking and probably speak extensively.

The most well-known speech errors are without a doubt Freudian slips of the tongue, in which the speaker unintentionally reveals his true feelings, damaging his appearance of politeness and leading to an all-round embarrassing situation.

Speech Error Types – Phonological Speech Errors

Some speech errors are phonological or related to phonetic speech.

Although there are countless ways that individuals can mispronounce words, we're going to look at two really common phonological errors:

Anticipation and persistence

Persistence occurs when a sound from a previous word transfers its method to a later word.

Here are some examples of persistence:

• He walked around with a tin tan (instead of a tin can).

• They found a hundred dollar dill (as opposed to a dollar bill).

Anticipation is the opposite of persistence:

It occurs when a speaker mistakenly uses a sound from a word that comes later in the articulation.

Some instances:

• She drank a child's cup of tea - instead of a warm cup of tea.

• He wore a weatherproof strap - instead of a natural leather strap.

It's very easy to guess what's going on with perseveration errors:

Our tongues, faced with the complicated task of producing different sounds in a very short space of time, just got confused and produced the sound from a previous word.

Undoubtedly, linguists have taken the presence of expectation biases as an indication that our brain plans all of our articulations, even when we speak automatically.

This means that even before we start speaking, the entire sentence is readily available at a basic level in our brain.

For this reason, words that have not yet been spoken can change our language and cause errors when played back in a certain order.

Another typical error occurs when an entire word is replaced by another word that is different from the one you want.

Here are some examples:

• My CV is long – instead of short.

• Check out this charming little dog – instead Cat.

As the cases above show, the incorrectly substituted word is not random.

Instead, many alternative errors share some common characteristics.

First, both the replaced word and the intended word generally belong to exactly the same syntactic class - both "short" and "long" are adjectives; "Dog" and “pet cat” are both nouns.

It's certainly not likely that someone will accidentally say, "My resume is too eco-friendly" or "Look at this cute little watercraft."

Speech defect types – Foreign language errors

Most studies of speech errors are conducted with speakers using their native language.

Nonetheless, there is some research on the different types of speech errors made by indigenous speakers and also those made later in the live discovered a language.
