Polar bear family on the move for the first time

A polar bear mother and her polar bear child take their first journey together on the sea ice.

“The polar habitat of the 25 remaining polar bears is melting away from under their paws.

Does the largest land predator still have a future?

Scientists Sybille Klenzendorf and Dirk Notz want to find out in the Arctic.

For the documentary “Polar Bears on the Run,” authors Anja-Brenda Kindler and Tanja Dammertz accompany the researchers into a remote, changing world.

The search for opportunities for the former king of the Arctic also provides data on the effects of climate change on the People.

The Time urges: If global warming is not stopped immediately, some polar bear populations will decline by 20 percent in 30 to 60 years.

This is what scientists such as climate researcher Dirk Notz and wildlife biologist Sybille Klenzendorf predict.

On their research trip Klenzendorf studies the number and condition of polar bears in the Beaufort Sea in the far north of Alaska, home to one of the most important polar bear populations in the world.

Eleven years ago there were 1500 people living here, now there are only 900.

And there is evidence of malnutrition in these animals.

Dirk Notz from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg wants to find out what significance global warming has for the expansion of sea ice.

During his Spitsbergen expedition he finds Water, where sea ice should be. And the ice that is still there is getting thinner and thinner.

Starving animals are becoming more and more common there.

The changes in pack ice are apparently progressing so quickly that the polar bears have no time to adapt to the changing conditions.

Their survival depends on solid sea ice as this is the only place they can hunt.

In the “polar bear capital”, Churchill, Canada, the white giants are increasingly scavenging for food in garbage dumps.

In search of food, they penetrate residential areas - which is not without danger for the people living there.

Climate researcher Notz is certain: human-caused global warming is responsible for the retreat of the ice.

The fate of the last quarter of Arctic sea ice and the future of polar bears rest in our hands.”

How white does the polar bear remain – nature experience | Polar bear family on the move

How white does the polar bear stay?

Within just a few years, the polar bear has become a symbol of the fight against climate change.

It symbolizes a global change, but in reality the situation is this animals far more complex than what is conveyed in the media.

The documentary provides insights into the threatened lifestyle of polar bears.

Looking at polar bears over four seasons shows that not only the animals' behavior but also their biological characteristics are subject to change.

In order to get to the bottom of this phenomenon, we must examine the similarities and differences between polar bears and their cousins Brown bears, will be examined in more detail.

The two species are evolutionary related, and both are characterized by great adaptability.

The comparison between them shows how strong the Evolution of animal species depends on their habitat and resources.

The documentary takes you into the amazing world of polar and brown bears, from Finland via Kamchatka, Hudson Bay and Svalbard to British Columbia.
