The most beautiful waterfall in Switzerland – Rhine Falls

MSwiss German Rhyfall [ˈɾiːfal], FrenchRhine Falls, Italian Rhine falls, Romansh Cascada dal Rain), earlier too Great running called (in contrast to Little ones running), along with Sarpsfossen in Norway, is one of the three largest waterfalls in Europe.

The Sarpsfossen has an average of 577 m³/s with more water, while the Dettifoss in Iceland, which is twice as high, only has around half as much water.

The Rhine Falls are located in Switzerland on the territory of the municipalities Neuhausen at the Rhine Falls in the canton of Schaffhausen (right bank) and Laufen-Uhwiesen in the canton of Zurich (left bank), around four kilometers west below the city of Schaffhausen.

On the way from Bodensee, to Basel face this High Rhine Multi-resistant rocks in the way, which narrow the river bed and which the river overcomes in rapids and a waterfall, the Rhine Falls.

The Rhine Falls is 23 meters high and 150 meters wide. The scour in the impact zone has a depth of 13 meters. At middle WaterAs the Rhine flows, 373 cubic meters of water per second fall over the rocks in the Rhine Falls (average summer discharge: around 600 m³/s).

The highest flow rate was measured in 1965 at 1250 cubic meters, the lowest flow rate was in 1921 at 95 cubic meters per second.

The outflow was similarly low in 1880, 1913 and 1953.

The Rhine Falls cannot be overcome by fish upwards, except for eels.[1] This winds sideways (outside the riverbed in the countryside) up over the rocks.

Origin

The rocky subsoil, which is much older than the Rhine Falls itself, as well as the significantly younger geological processes during the current one Ice Age led to the creation of the Rhine Falls.

Due to the general decrease in temperature, the first glacial advances began around 500 years ago Mittelland and shaped today's landscape.

Until the end of the Rift Ice Age About 200 years ago the Rhine flowed west from Schaffhausen Klettgau.

This former river bed was again filled with Alpine gravel (Molasses) filled up.

About 120 years ago the river near Schaffhausen was diverted to the south and formed the Riss Age Rhine channel.

The course of the Rhine below the fall basin today corresponds to this channel, which was refilled with gravel.

During the last ice age, the so-called Würme ice age, the Rhine was pushed in a wide arc towards the south and reached its current bed above the fall on hard Malm limestone (Weissjura, Upper Jura).

The Rhine Falls emerged in its current form around 14 to 000 years ago during the transition from the hard Malm limestone to the easily eroded rift-era gravel channel.

The Rhine Falls rocks (large, climbable rocks and, according to legend, Seelentanzstein) form the remains of the originally steep limestone flank of the former drainage channel.

The very low erosional deformation of the fall section to date is explained by the low drag load (river bedload) of the Rhine below Lake Constance.
