The laurel-leaved cistus (Cistus laurifolius L.) is neither related to the laurel nor to the rose, although it looks similar to both. The leaves of C. laurifolius are similar to those of the spice laurel (Laurus nobilis), since the two are adapted to the same environmental conditions in the common habitat. The mostly magnificent flowers of the cistus resemble roses (Rose ssp.), but are easy to distinguish from them because of the wrinkled petals. The genus cistus belongs to the rockrose family (Cistaceae) and includes about 20 species, all of which have a shrubby habit. Rock roses form a main component of the garigue, an open Mediterranean shrub heath formation.

Cistus laurifolius grows as a shrub up to 2 m high in the Mediterranean area (Morocco to Anatolia).

"Labdanum" (also "Ladanum"), which is the resin of various species, is obtained from cistus. In summer, when exposed to the sun, the oily resin comes out of the leaves and twigs. Shepherds used to drive their goats into the dense bushes of cistus stocks and then comb out the clumps of resin from the fur. The name comes from the Syriac-Phoenician language area, where the plant as ladan (sticky weed). It was already used in the Middle Ages for beauty care and as a remedy and also serves today nor as a raw material for the perfume industry. Good "Labdanum" has a lovely scent that is slightly reminiscent of honey.

Rockroses are often attacked by a parasite, the rockrose shrike (Cytine spp.). These are total parasites that parasitize on the roots of various cistus and underground Water and siphon off nutrients. Only the flowers of the rockrose shrike come to the surface so that they can be pollinated and later the seeds can be spread.
