Inspiring video about treasure divers
Diver Somchai Panthong is sure that there are still many treasures hidden in the muddy bed of Thailand's “River of Kings”, the Chao Phraya.
The 50-year-old makes a living by retrieving all kinds of finds - from antiques to scrap metal - from the river in the middle of Bangkok and selling them.
Together with his nephew Tding, he searches for what traders, monks and warlords have sunk, lost and hidden in the Chao Phraya over the centuries.
Somchai and Tding can dive anywhere where the current and water level allow it.
Their territory extends from the north Bangkok's over the center to the harbor in the southwest.
At the end of the rainy season, however, they have to limit themselves to sheltered diving spots with little current - otherwise they risk it live.
But the many ships on the Chao Phraya, which is one of Bangkok's main traffic arteries, can also be dangerous for divers.
To make themselves noticed with their small boat and the equipment they built themselves, the men raise a flag. Somchai Panthong now needs a lot of luck because at the beginning of the diving season his saved money has largely been used up.
What will the daring treasure hunters find?
