The largest stars we know of in the universe

A size comparison of planets and Sonnen in space.

The largest stars in the universe

In this animation, the largest known stars and planets are placed in relation to Earth. VY Canis Majoris is a red supergiant. This star is the largest known star and perhaps one of the most luminous stars.

The radius of VY Canis Majoris is about 1800 to 2100 times the radius of the Sun.

If our sun were replaced by such a star, its surface would extend beyond Saturn's orbit. Its diameter is therefore over 200.000 times larger than that of the Earth.

Other giant stars: WOH G64, VV Cephei, Rho Cassiopeiae, RW Cephei, V354 Cephei, KW Sagittarii, KY Cygni, My Cephei, Betelgeuse, V509 Cassiopeiae, Antares, V838 Monocerotis, V382 Carinae, Rigel, Aldebaran.
